About this treatment

A removable denture, also known as a denture, is a replacement solution for missing teeth that you can remove and replace yourself. It is usually used when you have lost several or all of your natural teeth. The denture consists of resin or plastic teeth and gums that resemble your natural teeth.

Types of removable dentures:

  • Partial denture: This is also called a plate. A partial denture is used when you still have a number of natural teeth. The denture fills in the empty spaces by replacing the missing teeth – temporarily or otherwise.
  • Complete (total) denture: This is used when all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing. A full denture covers the entire jawbone and rests on your gums. It can be held in place with adhesives, but is usually not fixed.

What you need to know

The great advantage of removable dentures is that you can easily remove them for cleaning or at night. They restore the function of your teeth, such as biting and chewing, and improve the appearance of your smile. The teeth are usually made of plastic or acrylic, while the gum-like base is often made of plastic or acrylic to maintain a natural appearance. Removable dentures are often less expensive than fixed solutions such as implants. They can also be adjusted and placed relatively quickly.
However, keep in mind that removable dentures can sometimes be less comfortable than fixed solutions such as implants or bridges and may shift during speaking or eating.
